Career Center at Fashion College FIDM Shows Students How To Tap Into The Hidden Job Market

FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising has a top notch Career Center that proves to be vitally important for students, especially in a tough economy. Not only does it offer a wealth of resources for students and alumni, but it also serves as a trustworthy place for recruiters to scout qualified talent.

Ciel Kullman, Men's Product Development Manager for Zumiez, the skate, snowboard, and surf apparel chain, trusts the quality of education of FIDM Grads. "The caliber of qualified candidates from the Career Center is truly second to none. The guess work is taken out when I hire a FIDM graduate as I know they will have a solid foundation of applicable knowledge and true industry experience, even if they're applying for their very first job!"

According to FIDM Career Center Advisor Eliza Kitsinian, it takes more than a traditional job search to land employment in today's market. Just answering want ads is not enough. The solution is "tapping into the hidden job mark women's jackets et." Networking, internships, and utilizing FIDM faculty connections within the industry are the keys to a successful job search, all of which are fostered and encouraged at the fashion college.

Kitsinian says, "We are very big proponents of internships. Students really pull what they're learning from class directly into the work environment." It truly complements their education. The Career Center has seen a large number of students transition into full-time employment from the internships the Career Center helped facilitate.
Meghan Ahern-Schoenleben recently sent a letter to Career Advisor Angela Leavitt letting her know she's now working as Assistant Designer for LOST Clothing in Irvine. She stated, "I am a recent FIDM grad and met with you a number of times while in school. You were instrumental in helping me find an internship that has led to a career in the industry. Thank you so much for everything."

Recently, three Merchandise Product Development students also turned their internships into their first jobs. Kimberly Briskey has been interning at BCBG for the past six months, is set to graduate this September, and has already been extended a job offer as a Planner. 2010 Grad Morgan Murray, who had been interning at RVCA, just received a job offer as a Design Assistant in the Women's Department! Another graduate, Maria Napolez, just transitioned from intern to Assistant Buyer at BEBE this month.

Students benefit immensely from FIDM's established industry partnerships. GUESS Inc. has hired over 1,100 students from FIDM. CEO of GUESS Inc. Maurice Marciano serves on the FIDM Advisory Board. "Currently we have 74 graduates from FIDM working full-time for us in great positions," he said. One of them is Stephanie Hollingsworth, VP of Women's Design for GUESS Inc.

FIDM prepares its graduates for the future. In their final quarter, students have mandatory graduate meetings with a Career Advisor. Not only do they get tips on their resumes and cover letters, they receive coaching on social media and the role it plays in a professional life, as well as how to approach salary discussions and what to wear on a particular interview. Kitsinian says, "They rely on us for more than job leads. We provide the resources and the tools. We are a service."

With four dynamic California campuses, FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is the premier west coast fashion design school, educating for careers in fashion design, graphic design, interior design, and entertainment. FIDM's graduates include renowned fashion designers like Monique Lhuillier, Emmy? and Academy Award? award-winning costume designers, top fashion industry executives, and entrepreneurs.

  •     LIPOSUCTION PERFORMED WITH TUMMY TUCK DOES NOT INCREASE MAJOR COMPLICATIONS, STUDY FINDS
(Embargo for Release: Monday, October 4, 2010)

Liposuction is frequently performed at the same time as a tummy tuck to improve contouring and provide better cosmetic results. While liposuction has an excellent safety record when performed alone, there's been debate over whether combining it with a tummy tuck affects patient safety and outcomes. A new study, presented at the ASPS Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1-5, in Toronto, found no increase in life-threatening complications when combining liposuction with tummy tucks. The authors looked at 1,008 patients who had liposuction of the flanks or abdominal wall at the same time as a tummy tuck. Although major complications were not affected, the likelihood of minor complications in these patients was increased. However, the authors conclude that combining the two procedures helps plastic surgeons better sculpt the body and can improve aesthetic results, especially in the lateral hip area, which can be difficult to address with a tummy tuck alone. Overall, liposuction and tummy tucks are safe and effective procedures that allow surgeons to improve body contouring leading to better results.

By the Numbers:
-Nearly 120,000 tummy tucks were performed in 2009, up 84 percent since 2000, according to ASPS statistics.
-Tummy tuck was the fifth most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed last year.

Study: "Liposuction of the Flanks and Abdomen During Cosmetic Abdominoplasty, Safe or Sorry?" is being presented Mon., Oct. 4, 9:30-9:35AM EDT, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

  • MOST PEOPLE AGREE, THE BEST SCAR IS THE ONE YOU CAN'T SEE
(Embargo for Release: Monday, October 4, 2010)

Upper arm lifts have become a popular procedure to rejuvenate the upper arm and eliminate sagging skin. However, the biggest hurdle of the procedure remains the undesirable, visible scarring. A study presented at the ASPS Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1-5, in Toronto, found that the majority of people find a straight scar placed on the inner arm, as opposed to the back of the arm, is the most aesthetically pleasing option when performing upper arm lift surgery. In the study, photographs of a model with various digitally created scars were produced. An online survey with the photos was sent to 117 people in the general public, 10 plastic surgeons, and 9 people who had or went for an upper arm lift consultation. Across all of those surveyed, a straight scar placed on the inner arm, in the bicep groove, was the most acceptable, less visible option, of scar location for an arm lift.

By the Numbers:
-Nearly 15,000 upper arm lifts were performed in 2009, up 3 percent since 2008, according to ASPS statistics.

Study: "Optimal Placement of Brachioplasty Scar: A Survey Evaluation" is being presented Mon., Oct. 4, 10:15-10:20AM EDT, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

  •      OBESITY DOES NOT LIMIT ACCESS TO BREAST RECONSTRUCTION OR PATIENT SATISFACTION, STUDY FINDS
(Embargo for Release: Monday, October 4, 2010)

Although research has shown 70 percent of breast cancer patients are not informed about breast reconstruction, a new study found obesity is not among the biases that cause referring physicians not to refer women for the procedure. According to the study, presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1-5, in Toronto, obese breast cancer patients, although more difficult to treat, are being referred for breast reconstruction at the same rate as normal or overweight patients. The authors examined 384 women after mastectomy and compared breast reconstruction referral patterns, satisfaction, motivating factors and type of reconstruction across weight categories. One-third of the women were normal weight, one-third overweight, and one-third obese. The study found, about half of the women in each weight category received reconstruction and obesity did not limit access to either immediate (at same time as mastectomy) or delayed breast reconstruction. Obese patients were also as, or more, concerned about body image and sexuality, post breast reconstruction, as normal and overweight patients. Although satisfaction levels were similar amongst all the women, obese patients were more likely to feel sexually attractive following reconstruction and were significantly more satisfied with how their clothes fit. Motivating factors for reconstruction were similar, with the majority of women in each weight wanting to feel whole again, to avoid a prosthesis, to feel less conscious during sex, and to overcome the constant reminder of cancer, respectively. Obese women were more likely to choose reconstruction using their own tissue, rather than breast implants.

By the Numbers:
-More than 86,000 breast reconstructions were performed in 2009, up 9 percent since 2008 and up 10 percent since 2000, the ASPS reports.
-1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be d women's coats online iagnosed with breast cancer, according to Susan G. Komen.

Study: "Patterns of Use and Surgical Outcomes of Breast Reconstruction among Obese Patients: Results from a Population-Based Study" is being presented Mon., Oct. 4, 10:20-10:25AM EDT, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

All items will be given away over the course of Woolies' world record breaking pass the parcel Christmas adventure.
?
The 10 towns or cities with the best letters of nomination will win a visit from the record breaking parcel in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with the writer of each letter invited to tear one giant layer off the parcel and take away some of the top toys for Christmas (http://www.woolworths.co.uk/e/b/4294941767.end) valued at close to ?500.? Perhaps one family would just really enjoy rallying their town to break a Guinness World Record."

A Guinness World Record adjudicator will be present to watch the start of the record breaking road trip and to wave the snowmen off on their journey.
?
The Woolies snowmen are also planning on making a surprise visit to the children's ward at each town they visit, to deliver a selection of the most popular toys from Woolworths.co.uk.?

Plastic Surgery Patients in Baltimore Have Specialized Tummy Tuck Options

When it comes to improving your appearance through plastic surgery, there's no such thing as "one size fits all" at the Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery (http://www.sinnoplasticsurgery.com). Dr. Fady Sinno is offering his Baltimore abdominoplasty patients 3 variations of the procedure: standard, mini, and modified. By customizing each option he is able to correct a variety of concerns and restore a more youthful abdominal appearance.

"I have quite a diversity of people who visit me for tummy tuck plastic surgery in Baltimore – women and men of all ages who want to reshape their abdomen after weight loss, pregnancy, or simply because of the aging process," explains board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sinno. "Because people's bodies are so unique, I offer customized abdominoplasty procedures to provide optimal results."

The most common technique is the standard abdominoplasty. This comprehensive surgical option involves a low incision that runs from hip to hip just above the pubic bone and another incision around the belly button. Abdominal muscles that were stretched and separated during pregnancy or weight gain are repaired as well. A surgical drain is often necessary initially to avoid fluid build-up. Most people require 3 to 4 weeks of recovery before returning to work. While it's serious surgery, a tummy tuck is often the only way to an attractive abdomen.

"It's amazing how hard people are on themselves sometimes," says Dr. Sinno. "They often come to me after months or even years of trying to firm up their abdomens by themselves with limited results. I let them know that their skin and muscles have lost elasticity and cannot tighten up on their own, which often brings relief. While it's common to be dissatisfied with the appearance of your abdomen, each person has their own unique set of concerns."

This is where the variations come in. Dr. Sinno adapts the standard tummy tuck to account for the amount of excess skin to be removed, whether the abdominal muscles are stretched or separated, and whether the belly button needs repositioning. The mini and modified tummy tucks are less invasive options that can be used when the improvement is only needed below the belly button. These options involve shorter incisions, require little or no repair of muscles, and leave the belly button in place. The risk of complications is usually reduced and less downtime is required.

"As with my Baltimore breast enhancement pati fashion coats online ents, my goal for tummy tuck patients is to customize my surgical technique to provide results that naturally integrate with the body. I strive to make people look like they've always looked so good," says Dr. Sinno. "Though scars are unavoidable, I make them as small as possible and place them where they will be concealed by clothing. The tradeoff is usually worth it."

A recent trend in body contouring that enables Dr. Sinno to accomplish spectacular outcomes incorporates liposuction into the tummy tuck. He explains, "The key to great results for many people is lipoabdominoplasty, which integrates extensive liposuction of the abdomen and flanks with the tummy tuck. I can give people the firm, slim, contoured look they want by using liposuction to sculpt the waist and remove stubborn areas of fat."

Regardless of which option you choose, there are important factors to consider before having a tummy tuck. "Because an abdominoplasty is a complicated procedure, especially when combined with liposuction, it's important to choose a surgeon who is experienced in the procedure and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery," Dr. Sinno says. "I also recommend waiting until you are done having children and are close to your desired weight."

Dr. Fady Sinno (http://www.sinnoplasticsurgery.com/) is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been in private practice since 1994. At the Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery in the Baltimore area, Dr. Sinno specializes in body contouring, breast enhancement surgery, and facial rejuvenation. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of both the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dedicated to patient comfort, safety, and superior outcomes, Dr. Sinno has cosmetic surgery offices located near Baltimore, Maryland in Columbia, as well as offices in Westminster and Pasadena.

A big part of loving your natural hair is knowing how to care for it, so CurlyNikki.com has complied a list of ten natural beauty tips for happy and healthy hair.
1.    Binding wet hair into a tight pony is a curly hair care no-no, and can cause damage in the middle of the hair shaft. Instead, slick wet hair back with conditioner and a little oil or gel. Let it dry loose or use a headband to keep hair off the face.
2.    Avocado butter is quite effective in stretching curly hair. When hair is twisted or braided with the butter, it will generally have much less shrinkage than without it. Shea butter is another good example.
3.    Twist on wet hair and allow ample time for hair to completely dry. This is the cardinal rule for twist outs! Don't take 'em out before they have time to dry all the way. Untwisting when your hair is damp will inevitably give you the frizzies.
4.    Deep condition regularly as hair behaves best when it's nice and moisturized. Hair looks great when you deep condition every week: it's softer, more manageable, and less prone to knots and tangles.
5.    Co-wash or shampoo with sulfate, silicone and alcohol free products. When it comes to all your product try to keep it all natural.
6.    Don't EVER skip your hair conditioner. Opt for all natural conditioners and not just the ones that say all natural but read the ingredients. Your Tips: Find Street Fashion Online(may be you can find what you want on the oasap.com) conditioner is usually the initial source of moisture added besides water that you add to your hair so choose wisely.
7.    NEVER towel dry your hair. This only causes frizzness especially if you're using a terry cloth towel. Drip dry, t-shirt dry or use a microfiber towel.
8.    It is imperative that you cover your hair while you sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet. If you don't like to cover your hair, invest in a satin pillowcase. The satin is smooth and will not pull at the hair or absorb the moisture in the hair.
9.    Grab a spray bottle, fill it half way with water and add three tablespoons of olive oil. Shake well and use daily to add moisture to the hair. Spray liberally. You can always make more!
10.    The human head sheds on average 50-100 hairs each day. If you have curly coils, these little buggers are probably getting stuck in your coils rather than slipping out on their own. Detangling will help you get these hairs out and prevent tangles from reforming.

The SCARCE? collection was developed to fill a void in young boys' apparel world, featuring designs that that grab attention and make a statement. As the "Official Apparel" to the young rockers known as HAUNTED BY HEROES, that statement will have a real voice in the marketplace. In fact, five voices: Nick, playing the bass and vocals, Chris playing drums, Geddy on lead guitar, Charley playing rhythm guitar, and Brandon on the keyboards. Quite accurately, the boys have been deemed "The World's the Youngest Rock Band."

The five members of H/H met at the age of three, while attending daycare in the Northern California surf town of Pacifica. They began playing instruments at the age of seven, and by nine had graduated to center stage. The boys maybe small, but their sound is large, with influences for old school rock blended with their own original style.

Though only ten, the boys have held court with rock icon Gene Simmons, and have played venues ranging from Candlestick Park in San Francisco to the famous Whiskey A Go Go on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Most recently, HAUNTED BY HEROES played at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, where they were opening act to the International Children's Fund Gala.

SCARCE? will launch a series of unique promotions and marketing programs focused ar women's coats ound the band including music downloads with purchase, in-store appearances and even concert performances at selected retail partners. The band will also be the feature of SCARCE? point of sales pieces located throughout retail locations where the brand is sold.

"We are proud to sponsor these talented youngsters. Their dedication to their music, to their families and to their fans is commendable, and their gift of music is nothing short of amazing!" Nitzberg continued. "The boys really do embody what SCARCE? is all about."

Unique Opportunity: Nouvelle Seeks International Distributors for Newly Expanded Compression Wear Line

Thanks to emerging markets throughout Europe and beyond, Nouvelle, Inc. is pleased to introduce its newly-expanded post-surgical compression wear line to a broader base of international distributors.

International sales currently comprise 30-40 percent of Nouvelle's business, and it is in the process of searching for even more global distributors of its products. "We have successfully offered high quality, American-made compression wear through select international distributors for five years now," said Dawn Cover, president of Nouvelle. "During this time, we have sustained an unwavering commitment to ensuring the finest, most beautifully hand-crafted garments at competitive prices. In turn, our distributors have remained steadfastly loyal to our brand, which offers a distinct alternative to lower-quality, mass-produced garments."

Three distinct markets represent the cornerstones of Nouvelle's business:

Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Patients.
Compression garments are specially-designed elastic apparel worn after surgical procedures and throughout recovery. They provide additional support by contouring to the body or body part. Plastic surgeons generally recommend use of compression garments following tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), liposuction, arm lifts (brachioplasty), face lifts (rhytidectomy), facial procedures, gastric bypass procedures, male mastopexy (gynecomastia treatment), breast augmentation , breast reduction, and many other types of surgical sculpture procedures. Dermatologists also may recommend compression wear for patients with lymphoma, burns, and varicose veins to help improve quality of life.

Individuals Shopping fashion coats for Quality Shapewear.
Purchases of medical-grade compression garments for body sculpting, shaping and slimming continue to increase. Many consider compression garments an effective tool for contouring the body without having plastic or cosmetic surgery. While compression garments are not an alternative to losing weight or improving health, they can have a slimming effect by subtly smoothing and sculpting the appearance of the body beneath clothing. Often, people considering compression garments for non-surgical use have recently lost a great deal of weight, and may have excessive body tissue folds or conditions such as gynecomastia (male breast enlargement). Compression garments offer a safe, non-surgical alternative to stabilizing and compressing excess body tissue and skin folds.

Patients Seeking Scar Care Therapy.
Nouvelle recently added internationally-recognized ScarHeal products to its catalog as part of an ongoing commitment to superior results following cosmetic, plastic and aesthetic procedures. As noted in a recent edition of Ladies Home Journal, ScarHeal products feature an outstanding combination of ingredients designed to help calm inflammation and tame overactive collagen production in scars resulting from surgery, burns, wounds, and keloids. The line features four proven products for treating scars resulting from any trauma to the skin. Additionally, they offer an innovative, non-surgical treatment for wrinkles.

Nouvelle's exclusive designs and products for men and women are not sold in retail stores. They may be purchased directly from approved distributors, its state-of-the-art studio in Virginia Beach, VA, or ordered online at http://www.nouvelleinc.com. Four key features differentiate its compression and shapewear products from retail offerings:

Fabric structure.
Featuring four-way stretch and memory, each garment can withstand numerous washes, endure extremely long wear times, and miraculously retain original shape and quality. All designs have been through rigorous testing and meticulous scrutiny to ensure complete comfort and enhanced efficacy of every angle, seam and compression area.

Beauty and craftsmanship.
Nouvelle designs have a reputation for beauty. The company uses only the finest fabric available, and hand-inspects each seam and stitch to ensure garments are soundly, solidly constructed.

Variety.
Nouvelle offers an endless assortment of surgical garments for every procedure, including abdominal girdles, binders, augmentation bras, and full body suits. The company also features a full line of 2nd stage garments for women and men of all shapes and sizes. All products are latex and formaldehyde-free and proudly manufactured in the USA. A seasoned design and manufacturing team is ready to create custom garments on a moment's notice if a customer needs a specific item not typically available.

Comfort.
Realizing post-operative healing stages can be uncomfortable, Nouvelle has paid particular attention to every conceivable way the fabric touches the skin. Stitches are constructed so they are perfectly flat, so as not to aggravate incisions. Zippers and hook and eye closures are never in danger of contacting the skin. Not a single design uses metal wires or stays.

Nouvelle manufactures and distributes post-surgical compression wear, body shaping garments, and scar care products worldwide from its facility in Virginia Beach, Va. For more information about international distribution and sales, please contact Dawn Cover via email or telephone.

San Francisco Spring Fashion 2012: Playful Colors Reflect Optimism at Skunkfunk

As the seasonal rains give way to warmer weather, eco-conscious clothier Skunkfunk's landscape is resplendent with vibrant, head-turning colors. Innovations in design, materials and fits highlight the new Spring-Summer line, which can be purchased online and at Skunkfunk's Manhattan and San Francisco clothing stores.

"There's a renewed air of optimism in the fashion world right now," said Sean Santos, Skunkfunk's Valencia Street Store Manager. "People are looking for more colorful and playful clothing to wear not only to social occasions, but also at work."

Commenting on specific pieces in Skunkfunk's Spring-Summer Collection, which is called "Make Your Summer Anywhere" and can be viewed online at http://www.shopskunkfunk.com, Santos had the following comments and tips:

The Sare
"A jumpsuit like this adds luxe sex appeal while keeping the wearer uber-comfortable. Just add a pop of color in your clutch (and keep it vintage) like yellow python or patent magenta."

The Arginzura
"A classic silhouette like this is perfect for women of all sizes, and is appropriate for a day at the office or date during the day. I suggest polishing off the look with a cardigan, black tights and a mid-length layered necklace."

The Laka
"You seldom see a dress like this in stores, and I find the print sublimely optimistic. For an out of the box statement, layer an olive green, mid-length drapey skirt over the dress—which we also sell at all of our locations and online, big sunglasses, flat sandals and a floppy hat."

The Mariadam
"I see a nod to the '40s in this dress, and I absolutely love it! Vintage inspirations are a very big trend for us at Skunkfunk this season. No matter how this dress is worn, you'll always pull off a sophistication that is both feminine and flirty."

The Epelea
"Interesting details on the back of a garment create a lasting impression that can be powerfully seductive. (Just don't ruin it by looking back!)"

Skunkfunk offers urbanites eco-friendly fashion, including convertible clothing that can be instantly redesigned for different looks and occasions. The Spanish-born purveyor of fine clothing is applauded for its eco-friendly fabrics and ethical distribution practices that harmonize with the environment.

Skunkfunk works hard to bring positive change to three areas of the fashion industry: people, planet and prosperity. Textiles are carefully chosen based upon their impact to the environment, and include recycled polyester, organic cotton and Lyocell.

RECYCLED POLYESTER
Polyester comes from crude oil, a natural scarce resource with a low renewability ratio. Recycled polyester is processed in a less energy intensive way than creating virgin fibers, and it's a perfect option to give a second life to post-industrial remains or post-consumer plastic waste.

ORGANIC COTTON
Organic Cotton is a natural fiber cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides or fertilizers, and is not genetically modified.

LYOCELL
Lyocell is a light and silky textile made from regenerated cellulosic fiber that comes from eucalyptus wood pulp. The biodegradable fiber is ex women's jackets tracted under a sustainable closed-loop process that saves energy.

Many are calling this the "Version 2.0" of handbag hooks, revolutionizing the market and becoming the ultimate in lady like luxury. High quality materials are used in construction, finished with a selection of colored snake, lizard and crocodile skins and Swarovski crystals.

Marcy McKenna, innovator and host of HSN, says of MON MODE: "The quality is definitely unparalleled in this category. The finish, the craftsmanship, the design aesthetic and functionality really couldn't be better."

The answer to every lady's big bag dilemma are MON MODE handbag hooks. Perfect for the student carrying an iPad, as well as for the Queen whose handbag never leaves her side. From day to women's coats night, and from the '50s to today, MON MODE helps revolutionize the style renaissance.

Take it from Hollywood stylist, Jane Ross, who says she can't live without her MON MODE. "Just the idea of putting my purse on the dirty floor on a plane or in a hotel room," makes her quiver. "Finally!" she exclaims of MON MODE, "a handbag hanger for women who carry and RESPECT their designer handbags!"

Summoning the phrase "regal chic," the Queen's fashion is undeniably "classic," but it can never be called boring. A splendid display of Swarovski crystals adorned every outfit she wore this week, and a collection of graceful accessories helped produce the stunning final looks—which can only be chronicled as "superb sovereign styling."

The Queen's tasteful and sophisticated incorporation of lady like accessories is what elevates her style to a royal level. Completing her look with the addition of a unique hat, or a pair of white, long wrist gloves; no one can say the Queen doesn't know the difference between "shady" and "lady"!

Motivated by the Queen's complete look, designers this season are recreating lady-like fashion by resurrecting classic looks from decades past. Even the Olsen twins, who popularized Boho Chic with their hip clothing line, The Row, are focused on designing retro handbags with handles, in classic skins, for a lady-like twist in their designs. Trendsetters and fashionistas say The Row's new bags are GROOVY. You also see the return to lady-like fashions with Prada Spring Summer 2012 pleated dresses and classic '50s style handbags, again with handles. Big Swarovski Prada jewelry add even more "classic" to the entire look. And the ultimate head-to-toe finish can be accomplished with a beautiful skin MON MODE to elevate your purse (and your entire look to an even higher level of chic).
